Paul-Erik Söderqvist, Chant, for solo guitar
"Chant" began as an improvisation on an accidentally conceived special tuning, which turned out to be an open G-minor chord with a low C – almost a cello tuning on the lowest strings. It also drew inspiration from the sea and mountains in the city of Omis in Croatia. On one side of the city is the turquoise and transparent Adriatic sea. However, there is a stark contrast with steep mountains looming on the other hand. With the sea to the south and the mountains to the north-east and north-west, the city is protected from many sides, which made it a perfect safe haven for pirates in past centuries. This contrast of a breathtakingly beautiful scenery with imaginations of a darker history makes for an interesting contradiction, which is reflected in the theme’s ambiguity between major and minor.
